Project:Admin guidelines

Welcome to the Admin guidelines page. This page provides best practices, policies, and recommendations for administrators (sysops) to ensure fair and effective management of the wiki.

General Principles

  • Act in the best interests of the community and the wiki.
  • Use administrative tools responsibly and transparently.
  • Follow consensus and established site policies.
  • Treat all users with respect and fairness.

Use of Admin Tools

  • Only use administrative privileges for tasks that require them (e.g., blocking users, deleting pages).
  • Avoid using admin tools in disputes where you are personally involved; seek impartial assistance.
  • Document significant actions, such as page deletions, user blocks, and major protections, with clear edit summaries or on relevant noticeboards.

Blocking and Protecting

  • Block users only to prevent disruption, not to settle personal disputes.
  • Use appropriate block durations and provide clear reasons.
  • Protect pages when necessary to prevent vandalism or edit wars, and unprotect them when the risk subsides.
  • Always explain the reason for page protection or user blocking.

Deletion and Undeletion

  • Delete pages only in accordance with community policy, such as for spam, vandalism, or consensus decisions.
  • Use deletion summaries to explain your actions.
  • Restore pages if there is a valid community request or consensus.

Communication

  • Be available to respond to user questions and concerns, especially regarding administrative actions.
  • Engage in dispute resolution and help mediate conflicts when needed.
  • If possible, notify users when taking action that affects them (such as a block or page deletion).

Transparency and Accountability

  • Maintain transparency in all administrative actions.
  • Accept constructive criticism and be open to review of your decisions.
  • Recuse yourself from actions where you have a conflict of interest.

Training and Mentoring

  • Help train new administrators and guide users interested in becoming admins.
  • Share knowledge of policies, tools, and community norms.
